In 2000, I left the outdoor recreation industry to become a fulltime fiber artist, teacher and writer. My job now includes studying textile techniques, sampling, developing new ways to apply products and ideas, workshop development, more sampling, writing and revising instructional materials, preparing class materials, web design, book and e-book publishing, blogging, creating work for exhibition and articles, creating work for the joy of it, and yes, more sampling. Education
After getting my B.A. in Communication at Purdue University in 1980, I worked as a trade magazine editor and as a professional whitewater canoeing instructor. Those experiences strongly influence my teaching style and my approach to adult education. I've studied experiential education theory (including gender influences on learning), and honed my teaching skills in high-risk environments. As a fiber arts workshop leader, you can expect me to be highly organized, skilled at course content delivery, ready to meet the needs of students with various learning styles, and grateful to teach in an environment where my hair doesn't freeze. I'll come prepared with class materials that make efficient use of class time, reference materials that get rave reviews, and a flexible plan that makes learning exciting and fun.
