Molten
Polyester with disperse dye transfers, fabric paint, stitching
by Donna Kallner

About Molten
Molten was inspired by the colorful sunsets I love to see when I visit Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. At home, too often I'm distracted by details to give the sunset my full attention. But looking out over the water and watching the star of our solar system melt like molten lava into an inland sea -- that's one of my favorite things. The local color I celebrate in Molten was inspired in particular by the warmth of the sun and the warmth of the people on Washington Island, which is in Lake Michigan off the tip of Wisconsin's Door peninsula. Molten is constructed from a lamination of polyester crushed velvet and non-woven polyester stabilizers colored with disperse dye transfer printing and fabric paint. The thread that runs through all of my work is that it's stitched by hand, a process that encourages reflection on the stories that connect people.
