New Age Looping - 1-5 days. New Age Looping is a contemporary interpretation of a technique older than weaving or knitting. It creates a structure so stable it can't unravel, so logical you don't need to follow a pattern, and relaxing to work even when you expect frequent distractions. Workshops emphasize tension control and structural understanding, and help students at all levels learn to design their own projects. Depending on the time available, variations are introduced in a progressive fashion and may include knotless and knotted stitches, combination and grouped stitches, skipped stitch patterning, needle entry positions, shaping options, complex looping, and looping over a core (also known as Fuegian coiling). Some workshops focus on particular looping variations, including:
Bead Looping. Unlike bead knitting or crochet, where beads are strung in advance according to a planned pattern, in bead looping you pick up one bead at a time. You can make color and design choices as you stitch, working intuitively without charts or patterns.
Burundi Looping. In complex looping, the working thread follows a path that intersects with previously made stitches on multiple rows of the fabric.
Cross-Knit Looping. At a glance it's indistinguishable from stockinette stitch in knitting. In structure, it's quite different.
Freeform & Textural Looping. Learn freeform filling strategies and how to create dimensional textures, layered constructions and "scrumble" motifs.
My New Age Looping Lecture includes a Powerpoint program and a guided tour of the sample collection I've been building for 15 years. Your group will handle pieces worked in different threads and yarns to discover the range of possibilities from this timeless technique.
Netting With Shuttle & Gauge--1-5 days. Using a shuttle and gauge to work a knotted form of looping, learn to work diamond mesh netting. Start from a foundation chain and work flat to create scarves, shawls, hammocks and more, or from a grommet base and work in the round to make shopping bags, fishing nets, hats, and other 3D forms. As time allows students will explore square-mesh netting and patterned or "fancy" netting.
Complete Fabrication Lecture (suitable for keynote). No matter how many gee-whiz techniques you learn, the most amazing thing you create is the life you choose for yourself. But just try explaining to the neighbors about the multi-color undies on the clothesline, the fade test that looks like a used car lot banner, the retting tank in the back yard. That's an art in itself.
